MAJOR INITIATIVES
Two major Trust-funded programmes involving all Masterton schools support professional development for primary, intermediate and secondary school teachers. Both programmes are designed to run over several years, providing extraordinary professional development opportunities to teachers, and in turn, quality education for children and youth. With the assistance of experienced education leaders, Principals’ groups and the Trust work together to design and implement the two programmes.
Primary/Intermediate Education Initiative
Since 2005 more than $580,000 has been provided by the Trust for a range of professional development programmes including: |
|
 |
|
|
| |
- information and communication technology (ICT)
- behaviour management programmes
- literacy – reading, writing,
spelling and oral and visual abilities
- teaching of gifted
and talented children
- visits to best practice schools by Masterton principals and teachers.
 |
"The fact that schools chose to send 167 teachers over
the two days of the Master IT conference is in itself an indication
of the significant effect the ICT development programme is
having. Without the seeds and the right preparation, nothing
grows - the Trust has provided the seeds and we look forward
to nurturing the growth."
|
 |
" Absolute 100% usefulness.” " It gets right back to the heart of good teaching, building relationships." " Kids love Circle Time and Golden Time and niggling aspects of classroom
behaviour have diminished." " This is probably the best professional development I've ever done." "I feel very energised and can't wait to get started." |

| Secondary Education Initiative
The Secondary Education Initiative has received more than $374,000 from the Trust since 2006 for a range of programmes supporting professional development for teachers. Programmes have included:
- The purchase of thirty-three interactive, electronic ‘Smart Boards’ benefiting all Masterton colleges
- Information and computer technology (ICT) training for teachers
- Extension programmes for gifted and talented students
- Professional development for teachers in ‘differential learning’ or the teaching of classes with students of mixed ability
- New curriculum development
 |
Electronic Smart Boards for all Masterton secondary schools
marked an important step forward in teaching methods, new technology and in developing a greater interactive classroom environment.

The Secondary Schools Initiative includes opportunities for gifted and talented students in science, maths, English, sport and art. A forensic science day saw students working with experts and police on a specially created "crime scene" |

| Wairarapa Workforce Development Initiative
Assisting young people with information on and experience of current and future Wairarapa employment opportunities is part of the work of the Wairarapa Workforce Development Trust.
The Lands Trust strongly supports these activities which include the annual Careers Expo and Industry Interactive Days linking industry and education through hands-on experiences for students.
|
 |
Wairarapa Careers Expo
The Wairarapa Careers Expo has grown each year drawing exhibitors from around the country and 1500 Wairarapa secondary school students, their families and teachers over two days.
"The hands-on activities at the Careers Expo were great. We took all our Year 10 and most of our Year 12 students and do not plan to take any more groups over to the Wellington Expo as the Wairarapa Expo meets all our needs"
|
 |
Hands-on with industry
Pruning trees, driving an excavator, jibbing and plastering a wall, drawing ‘blood’ from an artificial limb and meeting rural bankers are just a few of the activities experienced each year by hundreds of Year 10 students at the Industry Interactive Days each March.
"Bringing a range of industries together on one day gives the students a chance to have a go at and gain some great insights into a wide range of career possibilities."
